Plextronics "Shortlisted" for OSIA Award
Cintelliq, sponsor of the Organic Semiconductor Industry Awards (OSIA), in association with OSA Direct, has announced that Plextronics is on the shortlist for the Start-up of the Year Award. This award entries feature venture fund or privately financed companies which have set up operations in the last five years, and included the full range of business activities from product design and manufacture through to new services companies. Award winners will be announced at the gala dinner of the Organic Electronics Conference and Exhibition on September 26 in Frankfurt, Germany. .

Tennessee County Doubles Cognitive Tutor Use
Hamilton County School District in Tennessee has purchased additional licenses of Carnegie Learning's Cognitive Tutor Bridge to Algebra, Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II curricula -- doubling the program to nearly 10,000 students. As the Secondary Math Coordinator for Hamilton County, Christy Evans reports that the district has "seen significant changes in attitudes and performance among most of our students including the most challenged students in the district." The district anticpates improved math scores and, ultimately, higher graduation rates over the long term.

Plan4Demand to Host Demand Excellence Workshop
Plan4Demand has formed an alliance with Manhattan Associates to develop and host a best practice training program designed to help retail demand planners improve the efficiency and accuracy of their supply chain planning processes using Manhattan Associates' Demand Forecasting solution. Plextronics Runner Up in WSJ Awards
Plextronics was named a runner-up in the Wall Street Journal's 2006 Technology Innovation Awards. Selecting from a pool of 600 applications, judges considered whether the technology truly represents a breakthrough from conventional methods, rather than just an incremental improvement. Categories included medicine and medical devices, wireless, security, consumer electronics, semiconductors and others. This was the first year Plextronics submitted an application. Congratulations!

CL Fund Raising $22 Million in New Capital
To kick off fundraising of $22 million in new capital that is expected to take five years, the CL Fund has received $585,000 from the Community Development Financial Institutions Fund of the US Treasury Department. CL provides loans to businesses with a track record of generating job growth, as well as early-stage funding to startups. Jay says the CL Fund is important in that they're there for companies that have great growth opportunities, but may not be attractive to traditional venture capitalists.

Carnegie Learning Moves Into Maryland
Anne Arundel County Public Schools, Maryland, has purchased Carnegie Learning's research-based Cognitive Tutor Algebra I software for 4,100 students across the district's 12 high schools and 2 alternative schools. The adoption of Carnegie Learning is part of the district's commitment to closing the achievement gap between African American students and other students in the school system. The $370,000 implementation will begin this fall.

Imago Installs Upgrade at University of North Texas
The University of North Texas has purchased a Laser Pulse Module upgrade from Imago Scientific Instruments for the LEAP 3000 used in its Material Science and Engineering Group. The LEAP 3000X microscope enables 3D structural and elemental composition of specimens with sub-nanometer resolution. Upgrading the LEAP tool with the laser-pulse capability enables analysis of semiconductor and other high electrical resistance specimens. Read the full release here.

Imago Upgrades Atom-Probe Microscope
Imago Scientific Instruments has released an upgrade to its main product line, the LEAP 3000 microscope. The upgrade offers a mode called "laser-pulse" which enables analysis of semiconductor and other high electrical resistance specimens. The traditional "voltage pulse" function has been used to analyze metallic samples, magnetic materials and other electrically conductive specimens.
