Plextronics: Clean Energy Entrepreneur of the Year
Plextronics won the Grand Prize Award in the Clean Energy Entrpreneur of the Year Competition. The Competition was developed to promote and support the creation of world-class businesses delivering clean energy technology options into the energy market. Forum presenters pitch their business cases to a judging panel of coprorate leaders, venture capitalists, and entrepreneurs. The Grand Prize award is given to the clean energy company that makes the best overall presentation and who, in the judge's opinion, has the best chance of future success. Buisness presentations were judged according to the feasibility of their business case, strength of their management strategy, marketing strategy, and potential return on investment. Way to go!

PA in Top 5 for Venture Deals in 3rd Quarter
An article in the Pittsburgh Business Times notes that almost $60.9 million in venture capital was invested in nine Pittsburgh-area companies, helping to push Pennsylvania into the top 5 states in terms of deals for the 3rd Quarter of this year. Draper Triangle's investment in Plextronics made up a portion of that total. Local companies received the largest combined third-quarter infusion of venture capital in years, second only to the $70 million raised in 2001.

Iowa State Chooses the LEAP 3000X Si
As the centerpiece of its new W.M. Keck Laboratory for High Throughput Atom-Scale Analysis, Iowa State University has chosen Imago Scientific Instruments and the LEAP 3000X Si microscope. The new laboratory will be the primary research center of Iowa State's Institute for Combinatorial Discovery (ICD). LEAP tomography provides materials scientists with 3D images of their specimens with angstrom-scale resolution, with each element in the sample identified uniquely and measured quantitatively. Iowa State chose Imago's system due to a number of factors including the fact that the MicroTip sampling arrays help with specimen preparation and high sample throughput requirements. With the LEAP 3000X Si, Iowa State is poised to become a national resource in informatics-based materials research.

Aethon, Plextronics Receive Honors in Tech 50
The Pittsburgh Technology Council held its 10th annual Tech 50 Awards event on Thursday, October 19th, and both Aethon and Plextronics received Finalist nods. Aethon was a finalist in the Advanced Manufacturing sector, and Andy Hannah, CEO of Plextronics, received finalist status for the 2006 CEO of the Year award. Tech 50 honors companies the Council deems the 50 leading technology-oriented companies in the Pittsburgh region. The Pittsburgh Technology Council is the nation's largest regional technology trade association with almost 1,400 member companies throughout 13 counties.

Astro Teller: "Harnessing the Inspirations"

Imago Receives Multiple Orders in Last Quarter
In the fiscal quarter ending September 29, 2006, Imago secured orders for four LEAP Microscopes from three leading materials research universities. The University of Leoben (Austria), Iowa State University and Oxford University (UK) each added LEAP Microscopes, extending Imago's world-leadership position in the rapidly-developing field of nanotechnology instrumentation. Aethon Honored for Supporting Make-A-Wish
The Greater Bay Area Make-a-Wish Foundation honored Aethon and 7 other Make-a-Wish Heros at its annual meeting in San Francisco on Spetember 27. Aethon was celebrated for donating an automated courier system (the Tug), valued at $105,000, to help a boy in his wish to create a robot to deliver medicine to children in the hospital.

"Robotic cart pulling vehicle, No. 7,100,725" is how Aethon's patent reads for its Tug robot. The present invention relates to robotic cart pulling vehicles for automated hauling of materials indoors. More specifically, the present invention relates to a cart pulling deduced reckoning guided mobile robot system. Aethon received the patent on September 5, 2006.

Plextronics has been honored by receiving the Organic Semiconductor Industry Award (OSIA) for Start-up of the Year. The award is given to the early stage company that has demonstrated technology and commercial leadership. It was declared a unanimous vote by the judges.
