DFJ Raises $290 Million Growth Fund
Draper Fisher Jurvetson has closed its debut growth fund with $290M in capital commitments. With 5 companies (Visto, Raydiance, Kajeet, UUSEE and Solar City) already in its portfolio, the DFJ Growth Fund will focus on "large opportunity" growth-stage private technology companies that have completed the initial development stage and are generating revenue. Carnegie Learning Launches Higher-Level Math Software
Carnegie Learning launched its pre-Algebra and Algebra software solution for the higher education market. Designed to help college freshmen and sophomores reach competency levels for entrance into college-level math courses, the higher education software solutions are available immediately for use in January 2008. Key features of the software include adaptive learning technology, assessment tools and flexible sequencing to allow instructors to move students to specific units and through multiple course levels. Allient System Receives FDA 510(k) Clearance
Renal Solutions has received 510(k) clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration for its Allient(R) Sorbent Hemodialysis System in chronic and acute hemodialysis applications. Inspired Technologies Works to Make Breathing Easier
Inspired Technologies (formerly COPD Partners) received regulatory clearance for a medical device, VIAspire, that uses liquid oxygen to help oxygen-dependent patients continue with their quality of life. Liquid oxygen is lighter in weight and lasts longer than traditional cylinders of oxygen, and VIAspire uses it to deliver more oxygen as a patient's mobility increases, reducing feelings of breathlessness. A second device, The Portable, works with VIAspire to make the oxygen supply portable, and is expected to receive FDA approval soon.

San Diego Adopts Bridge to Algebra
As part of the San Diego Unified School District's (SDUSD) plan to improve Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in 11 middle and high schools, it has purchased Carnegie Learning's Cognitive Tutor Bridge to Algebra program. The $177,000 purchase is part of a Program Improvement plan supported by SDUSD's Education Technology and Mathematics Departments. AYP is an accountability system mandated by the Federal No Child Left Behind Act, which requires every state to ensure that all schools and districts make Adequate Yearly Progress. The San Diego schools include Kroc, Farb, Marston, Pacific Beach, Taft, Correia, Mann Expedition, Wilson and Clark Middle Schools, as well as Roosevelt and Bell Junior High Schools.
