7 Pittsburgh Companies Get $41M in 3Q
According to an article in the Pittsburgh Business Times, seven Pittsburgh companies received a combined $41.36 million in venture, angel and government funding during the third quarter of 2008, the largest third-quarter infusion in five years. Almost all of the companies are in the life sciences/biotech category.  Draper Triangle participated in three of the financing rounds: Aethon, ClearCount Medical Solutions and Entermedia, where the companies raised a combined $18.26 million.

Carnegie Learning Partners with Noel-Levitz on Math Readiness

BitArmor Takes Tech 50 Top IT Award
The Pittsburgh Technology Council held its 12th Annual Tech 50 Award presentation celebrating the region's 50 leading technology-oriented companies in eight categories for 2008.   Several of our portfolio companies made the finalist list, including BitArmor Systems and Carnegie Learning in the Information Technology category; Plextronics in the new-for-2008 Green Tech category; and ClearCount Medical Solutions in the Rising Star group.  BitArmor took the top spot in the IT category based on product innovation, revenue growth, and job creation and retention. ClearCount Medical Solutions Closes Series A Round
ClearCount Medical Solutions, an innovator of patient safety solutions for the operating room, has closed a $4.1M Series A financing roung. The company plans to use the funds to accelerate sales efforts of its RFID technology for the prevention of retained surgical sponges. Carneige Learning Contributes to Improved FCAT Math Scores in Florida
According to a research report released by Carnegie Learning, Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) results in four Miami-Dade County charter high schools using Carnegie Learning Blended Math Solutions were 14-18% higher than the Miami-Dade County averages over three consecutive years. Specifically, the number of students Making Math Gains in these charter high schools exceeded the Miami-Dade County averages from 2005 through 2008. The Making Math Gains classification is a component of the FCAT, and the primary measure of student achievement of the Sunshine State Standards. Chalmers Adds Imago LEAP Atom Probe
According to Imago Scientific Instruments and FEI Company, Chalmers University has installed Imago's LEAP 3000X HR atom probe in the university's Applied Physics Microsocpy and Microanalysis facility based in Goteborg, Sweden. Chalmers selected Imago's LEAP atom probe after a competitve evaluation of the technical capabilities of several atom probe solutions. Key performance criteria in the final selection were Imago's best-in-class mass resolution and data rate. Imago's LEAP 3000X HR microscope will complement the FEI systems already in use at the facility, including: Titan 80-300 S/TEM, Strata DB-235 DualBeam, and Quanta 200 Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM).  Visit www.imago.com for more information.

Plextronics Awarded $1.2M for Flexible Printed Electronics
Plextronics, Inc. has secured $1.2 million in government funding as part of the 2009 Defense Appropriations Bill Continuing Resolution (H.R. 2638) that was signed into law on September 30. The award is a new contract for the company to develop flexible and light-weight printed electronics for the United States Military, including products and applications such as flexible solar panels for tent tops, solar-powered foldable blankets and helmet-mounted panels, printed lighting, flexible displays and printed circuitry. First International Summit on ISOS held in Golden, CO
The first International Summit on Organic Photovoltaic Stability (ISOS) was recently co-hosted by the Department of Energy (DOE), its National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Plextronics, Inc. The findings from the summit were then presented at the SPIE Optics + Photonics conference in San Diego. The goal of the summit - which had more than 50 attendees from six countries - was to help focus international attention and efforts on the most important issues related to organic photovoltaic (OPV) stability, especially those that are relevant to general measurement practices.
