Study: BodyMedia Users Lose 3X More Weight
Results from a two-year clinical trial confirm that particpants who used BodyMedia's wearable body-monitoring technology lost up to three times more weight than individuals who did not. Known as the Lifestyle Education for Activity and Nuturition for a Leaner You (LEAN). The study was conducted under the direction of Dr. Steven Blair at The Arnold School of Public Health, University of South Carolina, and followed 197 overweight or obese men and women from February 2008 through December 2009 who had Internet access and were not engaged in an exercise program or formal weight loss program.  Dr. Blair said "The initial study results show that wearable body monitors can be a useful weight loss tool alone, or when used with a standard weight loss program." Florida Adopts Carnegie Learning as Core Math Materials
The Florida Department of Education has adopted Carnegie Learning Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II Textbooks and ancillary software as core mathematics instructional materials for use in Florida school districts through June 2016. The state-specific textbooks provide content customized to support the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards. Carnegie Learning Math Curricula are aligned to all state and most district standards and to the five content strands of the standards set by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Carnegie Learning Partners with TX School District
Carnegie Learning has partnered with Pawnee Independent School District in Texas to improve junior high math.  The school district received a three-year Texas Education Agency (TEA) grant which includes professional development for teachers (given by Carnegie Learning) and 20 laptop computers equiped with Carnegie Learning software. Pawnee was the smallest of 9 school districts in Texas selected for the grant.

Early Stage Funding Looking Up
A recently-released study from the National Association of Seed and Venture Funds and Temple University's Fox School of Business found that seed-stage investments are up 40% over last year.  The Pittsburgh Business Times reports that the study, which compared the 12 months ended March 31 with the previous year, indicates a "positive step" for the economy as shown in results from surveying 650 NASVF member funds and organizations. While the study showed a 10% increase in the percentage of companies able to access commercial bank funding, it also shows that there is a great need for seed funding for companies in Pittsburgh.  Read the complete article at the Pittsburgh Business Times.

Raytown, MO Renews Carnegie Learning Investment

Raytown School District (near Kansas City, MO) has renewed its investment in Carnegie Learning Math Curricula following an initial three years of implementation that delivered measureable improvement in math scores. Carnegie Learning Bridge to Algebra Textbooks and Cognitive Tutor Software are used as core math programs in the district's three middle schools, and Cognitive Tutor Algebra I and Geometry software will be used as supplemental solutions in Raytown's high schools and with advanced middle school students. Inspired Technologies Raises $2.8 M
Inspired Technologies has raised $2.8 million in funding, most of which came from local companies.  Previous investors Draper Triangle and Birchmere Ventures participated; new this round was Smithfield Equity Partners, the angel network arm of Smithfield Trust.  Inspired's CEO Rich Kocinski believes the capital infusion will allow the company to reach cash flow positive.  The company's flagship product, SmartDose, is a portable oxygen device that automatically adjusts the dose of oxygen based on a user's activity level.
