Robot-Ready Consumers?
A recent Red Herring article questioned the readiness of consumers to pay for mobile robots - those which move around and interact with people. While the industry is growing, the consumer market is clearly in its early stages. Many companies have found other applications for their robots while they wait for the consumer market to take off -- the government and industries are the two biggest targets. Aldo Zini, president of Aethon, went to the hospital industry with his TUG carrier robots. TUGs carry medicine and charts throughout hospitals elminating the need for nurse's and aides to do the transporting. Read the full article here.

Draper Triangle Receives $5 Million
Draper Triangle received $5 million from the Commonwealth Financing Authority as part of a $60 million package created two years ago to make more capital available for startups. As one of the most active investors in southwestern PA, we were the only Pittsburgh-based recipient out of the seven venture firms who received money.

Imago Delivers Leap® 3000 to Tohoku University
Imago Scientific Instruments, in conjunction with its representatives based in Japan, the Noah Corporation, has delivered a LEAP® 3000 Metrology System to Tohoku University. The LEAP will be used to analyze the effects of nuclear irradiation on materials. Imago was selected based on its global leadership position in nanoscale metrology and the proven capability of the LEAP system. This is the third system Imago has installed in Japan in the last six months.

Precision Therapeutics Receives Patent
Precision Therapeutics received a patent for "Method for culturing and assaying cells, No. 6,933,129." The invention relates to screening and testing of active agents, including chemotherapeutic agents, to predict potential efficacy in individual patients in whom treatment with such agents is indicated. The invention also relates to a method for screening for expression of cellular markers, secreted factors or tumor antigens by cells for determining the disease state of the cells and for monitoring the potential efficacy of treatment agents.

Carnegie Learning Partners with LAUSD
Carnegie Learning has been awarded a three-year, multi-million dollar contract by the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) to provide algebra readiness and Algebra I curricula to more than 25,000 middle and high school students. The contract represents a significant expansion of Carnegie Learning's current contract with the school district, and serves as a response to the growing awareness of the importance of math achievement in middle and high school.
